The phone settings that quietly improve mobile gaming

Most phones ship with settings that fight against a good gaming session, and almost nobody digs into them. After testing dozens of games, I've got a short list of changes that made a real difference across the board.

Start with the refresh rate. If your phone can hit 120Hz, some games look gorgeous but drain the battery fast — I lock it to 60Hz for anything I plan to play for an hour or more. Then there's the game mode or performance toggle most manufacturers hide in settings; turning it on genuinely reduces stutter and background interruptions.

Notifications are the silent killer of immersion. Do-not-disturb during play saves you from a mid-race popup that costs you the run. And if a game gives you a graphics slider, drop shadows and particle effects first — they cost the most and you'll barely notice them gone.

None of this is exciting, but it's the difference between a game that feels janky and one that feels smooth. Ten minutes in your settings pays off across every title you play.
