Why some games eat your battery and others barely sip it

Why some games eat your battery and others barely sip it

We note battery use in every review, and readers keep asking why two games that look similar can have wildly different drain. The short answer: it's rarely about how a game looks and mostly about what it's constantly calculating.

Real-time games are the hungry ones. A racer pushing lighting effects at high framerate keeps the GPU and screen working flat out, and that's where your charge goes. Add heat into the mix and the phone throttles, which is why long racing sessions warm the case up.

Turn-based and tile-based games, on the other hand, mostly sit idle between your inputs. A strategy game or a cozy sim can run for an hour on a fraction of the power a racer burns in twenty minutes. The screen still costs something, but the processor gets to rest.

If battery matters to you, match the game to the moment. Save the flashy stuff for when you're near a charger, and lean on the calmer genres for the commute. It sounds obvious, but it changed how I plan my play sessions.
